Diversity is one of our core values at HEC Paris, and actively promoting and empowering women to achieve their ambitions is an integral part of our DNA. In this interview, we delve into the inspiring stories of two of our alumnae - Basak Barcin and Gladys Lipombi - who have carved successful careers in the finance sector. Their journeys, challenges, and insights offer invaluable lessons for women aspiring to make their mark in the fast-moving world of finance.

The pivotal impact of HEC Paris in shaping their careers

Basak: The Master in International Finance offered the perfect blend of technical courses, electives and real-world exposure. The business school environment allowed me to engage directly with investment banks and asset management firms and acquire the necessary knowledge in financial markets.

The intensity of exam schedules also prepared me for the fast-paced nature of investment banking. But more importantly campus life fostered collaboration. Studying, preparing applications, and discussing career aspirations with peers created a strong network that remains invaluable today.

Gladys: The Master in Economics & Finance was incredibly helpful. It provided specialized courses in areas like Mergers & Acquisitions and financial markets, giving me the flexibility to focus on my areas of interest. Additionally, the networking events, the contact with alumni and the study trip to London, gave me deep industry exposure and helped me discover a wealth of career opportunities.

The Investment Banking elective was another highlight. It helped me build confidence in technical skills such as financial modeling, prepared me for interviews, and facilitated networking with major banks. The collaborative environment at HEC Paris was also crucial - we supported each other through applications and career decisions.

How HEC Paris empowers women students

Basak: The beautiful thing about the Master in International Finance is that it was very gender neutral - what mattered was your capabilities, ambition, and curiosity, not your gender. The balanced gender ratio in my class reinforced the idea that finance is for everyone, and our male classmates were just as supportive as the female ones.

Gladys: HEC Paris ensured that each student felt that they could do anything and actively encouraged us to pursue our dream careers in banking or other financial institutions. Having female faculty in finance and accounting, economics as role models was also valuable and source of inspiration for the future.

The challenges of being a woman in the finance sector

Basak: Sitting at the decision-making table is empowering, but it does have its challenges. When I started, there were fewer female role models to look up to. But today, the industry is making significant strides in terms of gender equality and diversity. It’s great that more women are coming into the industry. We just need to continue speaking up and supporting one another to make our voices heard.

Gladys: A few years ago, being a woman in investment banking was more an exception than the rule, but that is changing. The finance industry is actively trying to have more women on board by organizing recruitment events and creating women’s networks. We need to build and develop this community to provide each other with mutual support and continue to move forward.

The importance of women role models and mentors

Basak: I’ve never had or relied on just one mentor. Instead, I’ve learned from multiple women at different stages of my life - starting with my mother, and later, strong female role models I’ve met during my career. By networking and picking up insights from each of them, I’ve created a diverse support system. When I need advice, I know who to reach out to.

Gladys: During my internship, I was fortunate to work with a Managing Director who was not only highly skilled but also an exceptional leader. Seeing her confidence and expertise reaffirmed my belief that women can excel in finance without compromising who they are. She became a role model for me.

Some words of advice for their younger selves

Basak: I would tell myself to speak up much more. You don’t need to have all the facts before contributing to a discussion – if you have a good idea, start talking about it and you will learn and become more confident along the way. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and don't be afraid to fail.

Gladys: I would tell myself that the finance sector offers a space where you can grow and where your opinions are valued even if you haven’t followed the traditional path to a career in the finance industry. Things have changed - you can be one hundred percent yourself and still have a great career.

Their advice for future women students in finance

Basak: Don’t be shy, be curious, and don’t be afraid to ask questions and speak up. Reach out to as many people as possible, both men and women, for guidance and advice. Everyone goes through challenges and knowing how others have navigated them will really help you succeed.

Gladys: You don’t need prior experience or knowledge - what really matters is motivation and hard work. The finance industry has evolved and values diverse backgrounds. The technical skills can be learned at any stage - it's never too late!

The journeys of Basak and Gladys exemplify the transformation of the finance industry into a more inclusive space. Their insights serve as an inspiration for future female leaders in finance - proving that with determination, support, and the right education, breaking barriers is always possible.
